The wind turbine is installed on a monopole tower, 90 ft above grade at about 1000 ft elevation. Average annual wind speed at Skyline School is 11.2 mph.

The wind turbine project at Skyline School represents the first time the school will be able to generate electricity for its own use. The raising of the wind turbine is also a first for Portland Public Schools.
The turbine installation was part of day of renewable energy education led by BEF project staff and Skyline teachers and volunteers. Students broke into teams to build and test their own wind turbines and measured the impact of blade size, shape, and rotation. A slide presentation on solar and wind generation was also viewed during student assemblies that day. The event was covered on daily news broadcasts on KGW, KPTV, and The Business Journal.
The anemometer that is installed on the 90 foot monopole tower will monitor and record the actual wind conditions that the turbine will experience. The data will allow students and interested community members to evaluate the efficiency of the system under real-world conditions.
Funding for the project was provided by the Northwest Environmental Defense Council, the Energy Trust of Oregon, the Bonneville Environmental Foundation and the Oregon Department of Energy's Business Energy Tax Credit program.
