Today, Ballard High School generated 2 Kilowatt-hours of electricity. From fossil-fueled sources, this amount of electricity would have emitted 2 lbs of CO2 into the atmosphere.

This could power:

  • An electric toothbrush for 6 weeks
  • A 42" plasma-screen television for 3 hours
  • A typical video game system for 3 days

The oldest continuously operating high school program in Seattle renewed its commitment to renewable energy and joined the Solar 4R Schools community with the installation of a new data monitoring system in July 2008. The system allows students at Ballard High School – founded in 1901 - to view real-time data produced by its 640-watt solar-electric system it installed in October 2003 with partner Seattle City Light. In addition to the data monitoring, Solar 4R Schools also provided teachers with activity guides and science kits.
