Today, Barnard Elementary School generated 5 Kilowatt-hours of electricity. From fossil-fueled sources, this amount of electricity would have emitted 7 lbs of CO2 into the atmosphere.

This could power:

  • An electric toothbrush for 19 weeks
  • A 42" plasma-screen television for 9 hours
  • A typical video game system for 1 week

In September of 2006, Barnard Elementary in Washington, D.C. became one of six photovoltaic projects to be sponsored by the Vote For Change Renewable Energy Project. The 1.1 kW solar-electric system is part of a national effort by artists such as Stone Gossard, Pearl Jam, REM, Bonnie Raitt and the Dave Matthews Band to raise awareness of the environmental impact of our energy choices. Other projects include Orlo Vista Elementary, Woodward School for Technology, Maharishi School, The Family Centers Building Project and Lake Metroparks Farmpark.
