Sky Valley Education Center

Sky Valley Education Center

Sky Valley Education Center (SVEC), an alternative K-12 public school, is the second largest school in the Monroe School District with 800 students (400 families) from all over Snohomish County. Our program is based on parent engagement as co-educators and offers a unique opportunity for educating both students and adults within the community. We offer a wide range of innovative educational programs that are focused on technology, environmental science, and sustainability (Environmental Science School (ESS), Montessori, Digipen, Robotics). Staff members in these programs, well adept at creating engaging curriculum for all learners, have expertise in the scientific underpinnings of renewable energy and are aware of the important role these technologies will play in the future. SVEC has established many successful district-wide community outreach programs (annual wetland and salmon hatchery tours, a portable planetarium, student-run school clubs) and annually hosts a regional robotics competition (FIRST Robotics Competition). These programs demonstrate a commitment to and experience in effective public outreach that serves many members of the larger community. As one example of our ability to reach Snohomish County utility patrons, SVEC students administered a questionnaire to 39 community members at our last monthly Montessori parent meeting and found that only 1 person was aware of the utility’s Planet Power program, yet all 39 parents were interested in learning more about this program. This is just a small example of the ease with which we can serve to educate Snohomish County residents about renewable energy and promote participation in the Planet Power Program. Sky Valley Education Center received renewable classroom materials and a teacher training through a grant from Snohomish County PUD's Planet Power program.
