Today, Spruce Street School generated 3 Kilowatt-hours of electricity. From fossil-fueled sources, this amount of electricity would have emitted 4 lbs of CO2 into the atmosphere.

This could power:

  • An electric toothbrush for 10 weeks
  • A 42" plasma-screen television for 5 hours
  • A typical video game system for 5 days

In May 2006 Seattle City Light installed eight solar panels on a part of the rooftop of Spruce Street School, near the school's Playground in the Sky--a rooftop playground. Solar 4R Schools was asked to add a data monitoring system and weather station to the pre-existing photovoltaic system at Spruce Street School in October 2008. In addition, Solar 4R Schools provided teachers with activity guides.
Spruce Street School was founded in 1982, and is Seattle's only downtown elementary school. The school offers highly personalized instruction, focused on students' social-emotional development and academic excellence.
