In December of 2002, West Salem High School became the second of BEF's Solar 4R Schools projects. Salem Electric, Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), West Coast Bank and Northside Electric all contributed toward funding a 2.8 kW utility interactive solar electric system installed on the new West Salem High School. The installation includes a data acquisition package, which gives students, teachers and community members access to download system performance and temperature/solar radiation data. The school opened its doors in the fall of 2002 and the design incorporates many energy efficient and environmentally friendly architectural features.
