About the School:

Located in Bothell, Washington, the Clearwater School was founded in 1996 and has been a Washington State certified private school since 1999. The school is a nonprofit 501(c)(3 organization that serves children ages 4-19 as a K-12 school. The educational experience at Clearwater provides a unique continuity for students who are able to begin kindergarten in the same school that they achieve their high school diploma.

As a Renewable School, Clearwater is building a dedicated community of renewable energy educators, generating clean energy through their photovoltaic (PV) system. At the time of the project, the system's performance data was used as an educational tool to bring energy topics to life in their classrooms. The PV system features a single 2.38-kilowatt array of 14 Scholt Solar 120-watt PV modules. Under full sun conditions, the system could light more than 150 compact fluorescent light bulbs. In a single year, it will produce more than 2,300 kilowatt-hours of clean, renewable energy. Educators within the school received a customized renewable energy teacher training, hands-on science kit materials to augment the school's existing curricula, and complete access to the resources available on the Solar4RSchools.org website.

Participation in the Solar 4R Schools program is an expression of The Clearwater School’s commitment to sustainable practices. Through this project their students are learning how solar energy is harnessed and how solar systems are designed and implemented. The solar system and accompanying curriculum provide hands-on experience with sustainable sources of power. Educators within the school hope the solar project will provide inspiration to the surrounding community about sustainable energy.
