Crow Middle High School is part of the small, rural Crow-Applegate-Lorane School District comprised of just 300 students. Crow’s student body and staff are enthusiastic supporters of sustainability, actively recycling paper, cans, cardboard and plastic. The school also converts cafeteria waste into compost for the school garden. Science students participate in local solar car derby races and have pursued a solar demonstration project for several years. BEF used funding from Bonneville Power Administration to establish a new Renewable School project at Crow Middle High School in 2014. As a result, Crow Middle High School is building a dedicated community of renewable energy educators and student leaders, generating clean energy with a newly installed 11.34-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) system and leveraging this new system’s energy performance data as an education tool to bring real world energy topics to life in the classroom. The energy monitoring services provided to the school connect the live performance data from the PV system to the Energy Exploration Center at Solar4RSchools.org. Students and educators located throughout the region can now use this real-time energy data to graph and analyze the system’s performance and compare it to other systems located throughout the region. Students at Crow will also use tours of the PV system to reinforce lessons on energy, science and engineering topics. BEF will provide Crow educators a customized renewable energy teacher training workshop that includes hands-on, interactive science kit materials that will help local teachers bring interactive education around renewable energy and science into the classroom.
